However, in indexes, any term that evaluates to null is simply not stored in the index. Null is a real value that can be compared intuitively like any other value (`Equals(null, null)` returns true). However, this enforcement would not be easily implemented without a powerset of indexes for all partial combinations allowed in the referencing tables!įauna has an interesting approach to null that I've grown to like: This would be an improvement on MATCH SIMPLE which allows the non-null columns in a foreign key to hold values which could not possibly match the referring table no matter which values are filled in for the remaining null fields of the foreign key. But we might also imagine another partial matching mode where the the non-null components of a compound foreign key have to all exist in at least one key in the referred table, while ignoring the null fields as incompletely formed references. the partial key with NULLs is considered an actual row key. One mode might be easily implementable with the new index method, if we want partial foreign keys to be able to reference partial keys in the referred table, i.e. One can imagine a further branching point in behaviors for foreign keys and I'm not sure how MATCH PARTIAL will be defined. As far as I know, the MATCH PARTIAL case is not implemented, but I think it might complement this new UNIQUE NULLS NOT DISTINCT behavior? The MATCH FULL behavior is almost a style checker to say that a compound foreign key should be all null or all non-null, while still ignoring incomplete foreign keys. An incomplete foreign key is essentially ignored and not subject to integrity checks. The default MATCH SIMPLE behavior is consistent with the default UNIQUE constraint behavior. There is also a similar issue with FOREIGN KEY constraints. The new optional behavior makes more sense if you think that the uniqueness constraint enforces distinct records even with partial keys, just as the GROUP BY clause will determine distinct groups. The check is effectively deferred, and the partial or incomplete tuple might become valid and unique once its missing part(s) are filled in with real values. The prior (new default) UNIQUE constraint behavior made sense when you think of NULL as this bottom value and meaning "unknown", while also thinking that a uniqueness constraint is only applied to complete keys. It just returns a group for each distinct value. The existing GROUP BY behavior is different than WHERE because it does not have a special rule for handling true values. SELECT 'hidden by false result' WHERE NOT (CAST(NULL AS boolean) IS NULL) SELECT 'shown by true result' WHERE CAST(NULL AS boolean) IS NULL SELECT 'also hidden by null result' WHERE NOT CAST(NULL AS boolean) SELECT 'hidden by null result' WHERE CAST(NULL AS boolean) , because like equality the NOT operator will return NULL for a NULL input (so NULL is not like false and does not negate to true). Not understanding this distinction is also where people write buggy queries using WHERE NOT. This treats both false and null cases as the other possible outcome, when rows are not returned. It is the `WHERE` clause semantics, which are defined as returning rows when the boolean expression is true. It's not the `=` operator that is special or significant here. NULL adds an extra state to every type much like the "bottom" type/value in some functional programming languages or type systems. I think that this topic gets tripped up with people wanting to assume boolean means two possible states. ![]() ![]() ![]() PT symmetry and spontaneous symmetry breaking in a microwave billiard. The fact that there have been no failures in the fiberoptic systems is proof of the reliability.įiber has gotten incredibly rugged, according to one of its suppliers. These can be difficult to diagnose and resolve. Due to large EMI loads in the facilities, communications errors occurred from time to time when copper media was used. The fiber cable delivered everything that was expected. ![]() The top reasons for choosing fiberoptic cable for use in the three Evansville Water and Sewer Utility (EWSU) treatments plants were bandwidth, EFI/EMI immunity and reliability, says Michael Halbig, president of InGen Technologies, a system engineering and process control company in Evansville, Ind., that installed extensive fiberoptic networks in the three treatment plants at the EWSU. While improperly installed fiberoptic cable and connectors still can be more fragile than copper, this is not the case when the appropriate cable, connectors and terminations for the application are selected and the proper installation guidelines are followed. Cable design and construction has progressed since the early days of the technology. When first used in commercial applications in the late 1970s, fiber cabling was not known for its ruggedness. This very straightforward document, put together by a group of developers in Utah, surely broke the conventions and limitations of software development, providing a real alternative to the Waterfall method.Ībove stands a perfect example of what Agile aims to be. Still, it was only in 2001 with the Manifesto for Agile Software Development, that Agile software development (as we know) was introduced and popularized. The principles of incremental software development were already being used through different scattered processes. ![]() What caused it? Agile software development. While the Waterfall model was far from being the only possible approach to software development, it was not until 2001 that it experienced a fundamental paradigm shift. Additionally, it is possible to estimate the whole project's cost and effort needed right from the start in the requirements phase through this model. The reason? To avoid starting development before the design work is completed, which could give way to possible incongruities in both ends. Waterfall ensures that each phase is completed before moving on to the next one. ![]() It contemplates all the essential points that compose software development, and its simplicity made it very easy to understand and adopt immediately. When a phase is completed, its output becomes the input for the next one, which starts immediately after the former. Some variations of the original model emerged in the following decades, but the logic behind Waterfall remained the same. It was published in 1970 by the computer scientist Winston Walker Royce, and it originally contemplated five distinct phases: requirements, design, implementation, verification and maintenance. The Waterfall methodology was named after its sequential phases arranged in a downward fashion (similar to actual waterfalls), representing the various steps of software development from one end to the other. ![]() ![]() “Good air quality, water, lighting is a big one,” Allegro said. That might mean using natural lighting in a space or offering different kinds of workspaces for various needs throughout the day. That’s still a focus baked into any good project, but on top of that is an emphasis on personal wellbeing. The idea of garden terraces, well-lit cafe spaces and kitchens stocked with free meals and snacks is all part of a focus in design towards wellbeing.Īllegro explains that a decade ago, architects were interested in sustainability in design. “But it can’t fix problems with the culture.” “A space will magnify the culture,” Moutsos said. Design and culture have to go hand in hand. While good (or bad) design does affect human behavior, you can’t lean on design to change office culture itself. Those people have to think critically about how they want their office culture reflected in the space. The confidence to use the spaces as intended has to come from above, from the people who set the office culture and make the design. She notes that an office where people are meant to work in different spaces besides their desks will only be right for some office cultures and offices.įor example, for an employee to actually work in the cafe for an hour or two, they have to feel like doing so doesn’t make them look like a slacker. Moutsos points out a potential pitfall here. You can imagine that executives tasked with a new office design might get carried away with cool features. Someone might want to move from their desk behind the string wall, for example, then meet with a colleague in the Tron room. The space FOX designed offers an open floor plan, yes, but also quiet spots as well, where people can focus or even just shift from one space to another as their work requires. That’s because of the many shared work spaces, like the cafe or the terrace. If you walk around the Spotify office, you might feel like you’re walking around more of a college campus than an office. But at the time, this was another way to attract interest from potential employees. Now, you’ll find smatterings of standing desks in many offices trying to attract millennial talent. The rooftop garden is the new water cooler, at least for some offices.Īnd speaking of desks, Allegro said that when they were working on the Spotify space, it was one of the largest installations of standing desks in the city at the time. Instead of sitting at your desk most of the day, and walking down a long hallway to a conference room or another office to talk to a coworker, the office design encourages chance encounters, which could lead to collaborations or creative conversations between coworkers. Or in any of the open areas with lounge chairs, near the string walls. That’s by design.Īllegro said that people are meant to have chance encounters with coworkers at the cafe that’s streaming natural light. ![]() ) The space takes up 63,000 square feet and is really more of a campus than an office. (Spotify expanded to more office space in 4 World Trade Center in 2017. This Spotify office is at 620 Avenue of the Americas, which Allegro said was the old AOL headquarters. The Spotify office, which borrows design elements from the company’s Stockholm headquarters but is largely unique, also has a Spiderman lounge, which features a graphic of the comic book hero a library where employees meet after hours for book club and a Wi-Fi-connected rooftop garden. “The right perks and social stimulation is the key,” said Allegro, principal at FOX Architects. Moutsos and her colleague, Jim Allegro, knew that one major way to attract talent is in office design. And as such, it has to compete for talent that might also be looking for jobs at Google or Uber.Īll photos courtesy of John Gallin & Son, Inc.
